English as a global language

There is no official definition of “global” or “world” language, but it essentially refers to a language that is learned and spoken internationally and is defined not only by the number of its native and second language speakers but also by its geographical circulation and its use in international organizations and in diplomatic relations.

Over the years, English has reached the status of a global language and commonly is characterized as a lingua franca. It has become the language that is spoken by millions of people all over the world—as the mother tongue, as the language used for international communication and as the language learned in the millions of schools.
